Stan Brown — Voice & Performance Coaching in Chicago provides voice training and performance coaching for actors, students, and professionals who rely on their voice. My work emphasizes sustainable development through in-person and online sessions tailored to your needs. No walk-ins, no automated booking, just intentional connection starting with an email conversation. I support clarity, presence, and expressive freedom while honoring your cultural background and lived experience. The foundation of my practice is simple: training the voice without erasing the person. Explore how we might work together by reaching out via email or call (773) 257-0462.
My coaching practice grew from navigating classical training environments that often prioritized assimilation over function. What I offer now is different: rigor without erasure, technical depth without conformity. I work with voices as they are—cultured, conditioned, and lived—while developing the coordination and awareness required for professional-level performance. This approach emphasizes embodied awareness and real-world application over theoretical models. The goal is voice freedom, not conformity, and tools that hold up under pressure both on and off stage. Your voice belongs to you. My role is to help you use it with confidence and authenticity.

I bring nearly 40 years of professional acting experience and over 30 years of voice coaching to my Chicago-based practice. My career spans regional theatre, Off-Broadway, Broadway, television, and film, along with teaching and coaching work across the U.S., U.K., and Canada. I am the inaugural W. Rockwell Wirtz Professor of Acting at Northwestern University and previously served as the founding Director of the MFA in Acting program.
I hold an MFA in Acting from the University of South Carolina. While there I was named a graduate acting fellow at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., where I received the core of my classical actor training. I later pursued postgraduate research in Contemporary Shakespearean Productions at the University of Warwick and trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company Voice Department under Cicely Berry.
My approach centers on one principle: training the voice without erasing the person. Through in-person and online sessions, I work with actors, students, and professionals to develop voices that are clear, reliable, and authentically their own. Initial inquiries begin by email.
